Chemical Pump Contaminates Gas Station Customers

DEDHAM (WBZ) ― Five people had to be decontaminated Tuesday after a fire extinguishing system at a Dedham gas station broke, spraying a chemical called halon onto nearby customers.

Hazmat crews were called to the Hess gas station at 5339 Washington St. just after 1 p.m. A foam pump burst, spraying the chemical onto at least three people, officials said.

Hazmat crews set up a triage and treatment area near the station for the five people, EMS officials said.

Officials said there was no fire at the station and it's unknown what caused the malfunction.

The conditions of the people affected by the halon is unknown.
