Police Dog Sniffs Out $410K Hidden In SUV

AUBURN (WBZ) ― During a routine traffic stop on the Mass. Pike Sunday, state police made an interesting discovery -- $410,900 hidden in a secret compartment of an SUV.

The driver of the car, a 31-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire man, was driving a Honda Pilot with Louisiana plates. He was pulled over in Auburn for a marked lane violation.

Police initiated a search of the car after the driver said he had very little information about the car and the owner.

A search dog, trained to detect narcotics, detected and odor coming from the back of the SUV. The vehicle was taken to the state police barracks, where a secret compartment containing wrapped up money was found, police said.

According to police, the compartment was hidden under the SUV's third row seats. It measured 3 feet by 5 feet and was storing $410,900 in cash separated into piles and wrapped in cellophane.

The money was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The driver of the car has not been charged at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
