2 Children Killed In Dorchester House Fire

DORCHESTER (WBZ) ― Tragedy struck a family in Dorchester Saturday when two children were killed in an fire overnight.

The fire broke out around midnight Saturday in a three-family home on Bellevue Street, killing 9-year-old Rebecca Zizi and 11-year-old Rooben Zizi.

Firefighters said six adults and eight children were in the building at the time of the fire.

The children's father, Gary Zizi, was able to get the family's 92-year-old great grandmother, his wife and two other children out of the house, but he couldn't get to Rebecca and Rooben in time.

"There was too much fire in the house," said 7-year-old Berlineda Zizi, who first alerted her family to the fire.

Gary Zizi suffered burns to hands and arms while trying to save his family.

Investigators said the fire started in a bedroom on the first floor where Rebecca and Rooben were sleeping.

"I saw a young boy, a grandma and an older gentleman, and they were all crying hysterically," said neighbor Teodoro Barros. "I asked them what happened. All he kept saying was 'my two sisters are in there.' At first I had a burst of energy to run in there and do something, but then I looked at the house, the house was completely engulfed. You couldn't do anything."

No one else was injured in the fire.

The blaze happened just one day after the Zizi family celebrated Rebecca's ninth birthday.

The Zizi family weren't the only ones home when the fire broke out.  The Canton family escaped the blaze when one of their children woke them up.

There was a space heater in the room where the fire broke out, and investigators are trying to determine if that may have been what sparked the blaze.

Boston fire officials said six people have died in fires in the city of Boston this year, including Rebecca and Rooben Zizi.  However, that number does not include the two firefighters who were killed in a West Roxbury restaurant blaze.
