The search is on for a woman wanted for using a credit card belonging to the town of Dover to purchase American Express gift cards from Staples stores in several Massachusetts towns.
Police say about $7,000 in charges had piled up before the town realized what had happened and canceled the credit card.
"The woman in the treasurer's office looked at these invoices and saw they hadn't made any of these purchases," said Det. Sgt. Jeffrey Farrell.
"They're American Express gift cards primarily and a few computer components. So they don't normally buy that kind of thing, and they contacted us and we started investigating."
The woman's photo from surveillance tape taken from a Norwood Staples store was posted on
Massachusetts Most Wanted.
The woman used the credit card to purchase gift cards in the amounts of $100 and $200 each.
She purchased the gift cards at Staples stores in nine towns.
"So far it appears to be just one person who's doing it in all of the stores," said Farrell.
"It has taken place all between the 14th and the 21st of April."
Police say no city employee has recognized the woman, and authorities don't know how she got the card.
Anyone with information about her identity is asked to contact Dover police at 508-785-1130.
Dover taxpayers will not have to foot the bill for the theft.
Police say as long as Dover can prove they weren't town purchases the bank will credit the town.
