The chief of Boston Medical Center's trauma center was killed when a boat capsized in Rockport Harbor, Maine Friday afternoon.
Dr. Erwin Hirsch was rowing in a moored boat with one other person when it capsized, sending both of them into the cold waters. The first individual was pulled from the waters by a passerby but Dr. Hirsch wasn't pulled from the waters until a Coast Guard crew arrived.
Hirsch was unconscious when pulled from the waters, which were estimated to be about 48 degrees Fahrenheit.
Boston Medical Center confirmed in a released statement Friday night that Dr. Hirsch had died, saying "We are all shocked and saddened by the news."
According to the Coast Guard, Hirsch was pronounced dead at Penobscot Bay Medical Center.
