At least six people in Massachusetts have been sickened by a strain of E.coli that has been found in several other states, The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said Monday.
The source has not been identified, but the cluster of illness may be "linked to the consumption of beef products."
The six victims in Massachusetts range in age from 3 to 60 years old. Five of them have been hospitalized. Three of the six are from Middlesex County, two from Suffolk and one from Essex.
All were infected between July 10 and July 16.
DPH said its investigation is focused on ground beef. Testing of samples collected from several stores will be conducted this week.
There have been 20 other cases nationwide and in Quebec.
DPH wants consumers to remember to eat ground beef only if it's fully cooked. Cooking meat to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit kills the bacteria.
E. coli can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
