Seven people were injured, one seriously, in an early morning fire at an elderly housing complex in East Boston.
About 150 residents were evacuated from the Heritage Elderly Housing project on Jacobbe Road in East Boston. The evacuated residents were placed on MBTA buses, until building inspectors cleared their return to the building.
Most residents were allowed to return to their apartments early Sunday afternoon. 15 apartments remained closed. The Red Cross is providing shelter for a couple of residents, while most were taken in by family or friends.
According to investigators the fire started with an electrical short circuit in the kitchen of one apartment. Damage is estimated at $500,000.
Most of the injured were treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation, and later released. One resident remained hospitalized in serious condition Sunday afternoon.
