Two elderly drivers were involved in a serious car collision Tuesday afternoon in Woburn, police officials said. The wreck happened the same day a transportation panel is
reviewing several bills to test or restrict elderly drivers.
Woburn police say an 83-year-old man hit a vehicle driven by a 78-year-old Woburn woman at Russell Street and Old Cambridge Road Tuesday afternoon. The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
The male driver's 84-year-old wife was taken to Lahey Clinic. Police say the man is charged with negligent operation. Police are also filing an "immediate threat suspension" to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which could result in the man's driver's license be suspended.
That driver was also hurt, and he was taken to an area hospital.
State and Woburn police are investigating. They say the man pulled out of Old Cambridge Road into oncoming traffic on Russell Street when he crashed into the woman's car.
Police say the Woburn woman was driving along Russell Street and had just driven through a green light when she was hit nearly head-on.
Rescue workers spent nearly one hour with the Jaws of Life to pull the woman from her vehicle.
There have been several recent car wrecks involving elderly drivers, including a
fatal crash in Stoughton that claimed the life of a 4-year-old girl.
Over the weekend, an
elderly woman hit a man with her car in Melrose. She has since lost her license.
