Emergency Center Opens For Gas Outage Victims

BOSTON (WBZ) ― National Grid and Keyspan have opened an emergency center at Boston City Hall Wednesday for customers to submit claims following a natural gas outage that began last weekend.

Gas lines were flooded after a break in a city water main Saturday eroded the dirt between the main and the gas lines.

Neel Schmoll, owner of Blackstone Grill on Union Street is one of the many business owners who made their way to City Hall. He said the effects of the water main break have cost the restaurant 40 percent of weekly sales. "We've had food loss, which is going to have to go in the claim somehow. Being that it happened on a weekend, I had a huge delivery on Friday."

More than half of the homes and businesses affected by the break are now back online, but for others, it's been five days since they've had heat or hot water.

Crews are still pumping out gallons of water from 13 miles of pipes in the financial district. On Tuesday, National Grid said crews pumped out 60,000 gallons of water so far.

Now the question is who will pay: National Grid or Boston Water and Sewer?

Boston Mayor Tom Menino said he just wants everything back to normal. "We just want to get it cleaned up and get the businesses back online as quickly as possible."
