Lengthy Appeals To Follow Entwistle Verdicts

WOBURN (WBZ) ― Neil Entwistle's attorney says he will raise constitutional issues in his appeal of Wednesday's guilty verdict.

First-degree murder convictions are subject to automatic appeal by the state's highest court. The appeals process can stretch over several years.

Defense attorney Elliot Weinstein told reporters that one issue he intended to raise was what he called "unlawful entry" by police into the Entwistle home in Hopkinton.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone says he's confident the convictions will stand up on appeal.

"A just verdict has been returned, and Neil Entwistle will spend the rest of his life in jail, which is where he belongs," Leone said.

Weinstein unsuccessfully sought to move the trial to another jurisdiction, perhaps Martha's Vineyard, saying his client could not get a fair trial because of the intense media interest in the case.

Entwistle was convicted of killing his wife and baby in January 2006.  His defense argued that his wife, Rachel, shot and killed the couple's baby before turning the gun on herself.

The defense did not call any witnesses.

Entwistle's father, Clifford, said his son's fate was sealed even before the trial.

"We will continue to fight for our innocent son with the hope that one day justice will prevail and our little granddaughter, Lillian, will rest in peace," he said.
