Why Are Drivers Still Paying Cash At Pike Tolls?
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
If your commute has you headed onto the Mass Pike and you don't have a Fast Lane transponder, Pike officials want to know what your excuse is.
One out of every three toll payers is shelling out cash instead of paying electronically.
When a Boston Globe reporter asked a Pike board member why drivers would rather wait in line to pay cash, the Pike official said "you should call a psychiatrist, not me."
The Boston Globe reports 66-percent of tolls are now paid electronically, but 34-percent of the drivers still prefer to use cash.
The Turnpike Authority has spent thousands of dollars on surveys over the years trying to figure out why some chose not to do the Fast Lane thing.
A majority used to site fees as the reason, but transponders have been free since February.
Some drivers say they simply don't want to hand over personal data to the Pike.
Others fear being tracked by satellite.
Perhaps more would make the switch if they were caught in traffic jams like the infamous
Easter Sunday backup in April.
After that gridlock nightmare, more than 45,000 drivers signed up for Fast Lane transponders.
