Focus On Fathers At '10,000 Strong Boston'

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Hoping to stem a tide of senseless violence among the city's youth, organizers held their second annual 10,000 Strong Boston event at Franklin Park on Fathers Day.

Jamarhl Crawford is the man behind 10,000 Strong Boston. Poor weather kept the crowds away on Fathers Day, but Crawford's drive helped make up for that in spirit.

Crawford targeted the conditions that lead to violence.

"And all the things that go into the pot -- that precipitate violence and contribute to the overall sense of hopelessness that people are stricken by," he told WBZ.

Father of three Darrin Howell told us the best way to help steer young people from violence is through example.

"Me being a father of three, I'm the example for them to follow," Howell said. "If I'm engaged in negative behavior then (negative behavior) will just follow."

And many believe the role of fathers can help other children in the community who do not have the right guidance.

"It's important to me as a father, that I handle my own child," Crawford said. "But also, too, that I could be of assistance to another yooth who may not have a father."

It's part of a grass-roots effort that these people hope will someday reach 10,000 people and beyond.
