Gil Santos Retires From WBZ Radio
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
It's the end of an era at WBZ Radio.
At the end of January, Gil Santos is putting aside his trusty manual typewriter and retiring from his morning sports slot.
Santos has been with the WBZ Radio since 1971. "Three-thirty in the morning, 38 years driving through a couple of snowstorms, I began thinking, 'I don't need to do this anymore,'" he said during a radio broadcast on Monday.
"It's been a great 38 years, and I am a lucky man."
Santos told WBZ Radio's Laurie Kirby that he is so grateful to have seen such memorable sporting events while covering for 'BZ. "I've seen the Patriots win three Super Bowls, the Red Sox two World Series, Bruins two Stanley Cup playoffs, the Celtics four NBA Championships in my lifetime broadcasting."
But Santos is not completely retiring. He'll continue to call Patriots games on WBCN.
