Gillette Footbridge Removed From Stimulus List
BOSTON (AP) ―
Gov. Deval Patrick is defusing a potential political time bomb by announcing he will no longer use federal stimulus money for a
pedestrian footbridge near the home of the New England Patriots.
An administration aide briefed on the decision said Friday the $9 million project "will be funded with other non-ARRA dollars," using the acronym for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The person spoke on condition of anonymity before the decision was formally announced.
Three weeks ago, the Metropolitan Planning Organization approved using stimulus money for the project.
The team is owned by billionaire Robert Kraft. The decision came just after Kraft and his wife, Myra, made the maximum allowable campaign contributions to Patrick and the state Democratic Party.
The aide says the footbridge cannot be built quickly enough, so the stimulus money will go elsewhere.
