Gov. Patrick's Daughter Reveals She Is Gay
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The 18-year-old daughter of Governor Deval Patrick told a local newspaper that she is gay. Katherine Patrick says she shared the information with her parents last summer.
Governor Patrick and his daughter went public with her sexual orientation in the weekly Boston newspaper
'Bay Windows,' which is aimed at the gay community. In the interview, the governor said he is proud of his daughter.
Katherine Patrick said she told the governor and his wife, Diane, that she was gay on July 3, 2007, about three weeks after the legislature voted to kill a proposed anti-gay marriage amendment to the state constitution.
"I'll always remember the first thing my dad did," Katherine told Bay Windows, "wrapped me in a bear hug and said, 'Well, we love you no matter what.'"
She says it was her idea to go public.
"As private of an issue as it is, we've sort of had to come to terms with the fact that we are a public family and there you give a part of yourself away," she told the paper.
Governor Patrick is a supporter of gay marriage. He said his family agreed to the interview with Bay Windows to make the information public on their own terms. Patrick said that he and his daughter will march together in Boston's gay pride parade this Saturday.
Katherine plans attend Smith College in the fall and is an intern at MassEquality, a gay rights advocacy group.
Massachusetts was the first state in the nation to legalize gay marriage, after the state's Supreme Judicial Court ruled in 2003 that it was unconstitutional to deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The first marriages took place in May 2004.
