NTSB: Newton T Crash Driver Ignored Stop Signal

Updated Photos: May 2008 Crash Scene

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Federal investigators say a Green Line trolley operator killed when her train rammed another last year apparently ignored a red stop signal.

Read: The NTSB Report

In NTSB documents released Monday, investigators said operator Terrese Edmonds should have halted her two-car trolley for one minute at the signal, which indicated another train was ahead. Instead, her D Line train went through the area and struck another train.

The signal that Edmonds ran through was operating correctly, according to the NTSB report, but a signal up ahead on the tracks may not have been.

The train that was rear-ended by Edmonds' trolley was stopped at a signal that had been malfunctioning. According to the NTSB report, several drivers had complained the signal was stuck in the red 'stop' position. Investigators found broken connections between track sections.

The NTSB report showed Edmonds was not impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

She died and ten other people were injured in the crash.

On Tuesday the government is expected to make safety recommendations for the MBTA, based on the May 2008 accident.
