Harvard Shooting Victim Dies

CAMBRIDGE (WBZ) ― The young man who was shot on the campus of Harvard University Monday evening has died.

He's identified as 21-year-old Justin Cosby of Cambridge, a junior at Salem State College.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone said Cosby was shot once in a stairwell inside an annex to Kirkland House, a Harvard dormitory.

It's an area that's locked and can only be accessed by students.  But investigators say no Harvard students were involved in the shooting.

Leone would not say how many suspects they're looking for and he refused to comment on a motive. Crosby's family says he has no clue why Justin was at Harvard, but they say he may have been visiting a friend.

Shortly after the shooting, police searched for three men who were seen running away from the scene.

Justin's mother, Denise, said she is going to miss her son. "He was not a thug. He was not in any gang and I've never had anybody tell me 'I'm scared of your son.'"

Cosby was rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he died Tuesday morning from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Denise was at her son's bedside when he passed. "My heart has a hole in it now… I am going to miss my son enormously. I couldn't ask for a better child, and I'm just heartbroken."

She said Justin never regained consciousness after the shooting, so he could not tell police anything about the shooter.

After the shooting, an e-mail was sent to Harvard students by administrators informing them of the incident and asking them to cooperate with police and staff.

In a statement, the university said the shooting appeared to be "isolated."
