A Devens man is in court Thursday accused of stealing a Jimmy Fund collection jar from a rest stop on Route 495 in Chelmsford on Monday morning.
The Lowell Sun is reporting that Concord State Police arrested Gerard Handley, 51 for the crime.
Surveillance video caught a man taking the jar off a counter, putting it under his coat and walking out the door. Cameras all over the store caught the theft from several different angles.
"The video was extremely helpful in identifying the suspect," Trooper Sharon Basteri told the newspaper.
The jar which had $100 in it was part of a fundraiser for a Megan McCarthy, a Tewksbury teen diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. A new jar has already been put up in its place and already has $300 in it according to the paper.
McCarthy, a sophomore at Tewksbury Memorial High School, is receiving chemotherapy treatments and platelet donations at the
Jimmy Fund Clinic at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The article also notes that she's raised more than $13,000 with her "Meghan's Miracle Team" for the institute's Rally Against Cancer.
