Stong Winds Batter Scituate Coast

SCITUATE (WBZ) ― Scituate is a town used to weathering storms, so this October Nor'easter isn't putting people in a panic, but it has already caused one boat to lose its mooring.

The boat, Ruth-less, found the seas to be much like its name Friday morning as it ended up on the rocks.

"We did send a boat over there," said harbormaster Mark Peterson.

They checked out Ruth-less but decided to leave it where it was.

"It was too risky for him to get in there. Nobody was on the boat, so at this point, we don't want to put anyone else at risk."

Wind gusts of more than 30 miles-per-hour knocked over the carriage corrals at a local grocery store and battered flags all about town.

The high winds and high seas had longtime boater Jack Dinneen kicking himself for not taking his boat out of the water Thursday.

"(I) should have done it last night I suppose, but what are you going to do?" he asked.

The harbormaster says fortunately the storm is coming after most people have taken their boats out of the water for the season. The ones still in have taken precautions.

"Typically, when people anticipate something like this, they'll double up on their lines and they'll take gear off that might blow around and become a projectile in the wind."

After the morning high tide, there was minor flooding on Oceanside Drive.

High tide returns at 10 p.m. The coastal flood advisory is in effect until midnight.
