Homeless Cats Overwhelm Attleboro Animal Shelter

ATTLEBORO (WBZ) ― A handsome tiger cat lovingly nuzzles his butterscotch litter mate as Ellaina Knight, cat coordinator for the non-profit Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter, reaches into their cage to pet him. "He's as sweet as can be," she says.

He's one of 43 cats rescued from the Attleboro home of Steve Burns who was packing his car on Monday to move in with his brother because his home has been foreclosed. He called the Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter whose volunteers have found a temporary foster home for the cats in Norton but say they need to get them adopted within a week. "They would be euthanized if we can't find other people to help us," says Knight.

"It's really tough 'cause I really did love them," Burns says, fighting back tears. "I loved them to death. I miss them and even though there was a lot of them, they would always come up to me, sleep with me, you know."

Burns says he lost his job two years ago. Then his wife died in arms. And now he's losing his home but wants the cats to have homes. "I took care of the cats. 'Fed them twice a day, made sure they had water and stuff. They're were all loveable cats," he explains.

"The majority of them, surprisingly, are in good health. None of them are fixed so, I'm sure there have been skirmishes between the unneutered males. So, some of them do have cuts," says Knight.

"Anybody else out there, don't make the same mistake I did," Burns pleads. "If you do get a cat, either make sure it's neutered, fixed, do whatever you can and get them fixed."

The Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter was already full when Burns's cats were rescued. Some of them have been placed but 34 still need new homes, as does Steve Burns. "I want to thank the new owner of the home 'cause he let me stay here longer than (he) had to and he's been really nice," sobbed Burns at the end of his driveway.

Knight says all the cats are socialized and would make good pets but they need to be adopted now.
