Menino also urged residents to take advantage of city pools, drink plenty of fluids and be aware of signs of heat-related sickness.
While WBZ meteorologists said Saturday had the potential to be the hottest day of the year if the mercury hits 96 degrees, it came two degrees short of breaking the record. However, with temperatures hitting 94 degrees, Saturday was the hottest day in July thus far. At 5:15 p.m., temperatures in Boston were still at a scorching 93 degrees.
The Rhode Island Department of Health issued similar warnings, especially for those most vulnerable to the heat including small children, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.
During a hot spell in June, two elderly people in Central Falls died due to the effects of extreme heat, department officials said.
