Gas Leak Evacuates Elementary School In Ipswich

IPSWICH (WBZ) ― Students at Winthrop Elementary School in Ipswich were taken to a nearby middle school Monday morning because of a gas leak.
Officials were working to repair the leak that was discovered early Monday morning on Central Street. The leak was discovered when school officials smelled a strong odor of gas inside the school.

Buses en route to the school took the kids to the Middle School Performing Art Center, and walking students were directed to proceed to the Middle School a few blocks away.

Crews are trying to determine what caused the gas leak, and it was determined that the kids would not return to the school for the rest of Monday.

Parents wishing to pick up their children at the middle school can do so by signing them out in the front lobby.

Otherwise, the children will be dismissed at their regular time and will be sent home by bus.
