Does This Popular Doll Say 'Islam Is The Light'?

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A little doll is causing a big stir nationwide, and here in Massachusetts. Many insist the doll says the religious phrase "Islam is the light" -- including Marion Cole of Medway.

"I was speechless, absolutely speechless," she said.

Cole and members of her church were buying Christmas presents for needy kids this holiday season. One mother requested an African American doll for her 2-year-old. The group thought the "Little Mommy Cuddle 'N Coo" doll from Fisher Price was perfect.

"I mean it's beautiful. It's cooing and gahing and giggling. It says mama," said Cole. "But then it says 'Islam is the light.'"

 Listen For Yourself

Mattel, the parent company of Fisher Price, denies the doll says anything except "mama." In a statement to WBZ, the company said, "Because the original sound track is compressed into a file that can be played through an inexpensive toy speaker, actual sounds may be imprecise or distorted."

Cole, and others say the phrase is clear as day. After receiving complaints, some Wal-Mart stores removed the dolls from its shelves.

Mattel did say the controversial clip would be removed from future production "to avoid any potential misinterpretation."

As for the 2-year-old who was supposed to get the doll, Cole says they gave her a Cabbage Patch doll instead, which didn't speak.
