Varitek Faces Friday Deadline

The Red Sox have given Jason Varitek until Friday to accept or reject their one-year contract offer, WBZ's Dan Roche learned Tuesday evening.
The Sox set the Jan. 30 deadline, which includes a 1-year contract at $5 million with bonus incentives, Roche said.
The deal also has an option for a second year at $5 million. Should the Red Sox decline to activate that option, Varitek would be able to come back with a $3 million deal for 2011, essentially guaranteeing him at least $8 million for two years, Roche explained.
