The Red Sox have reached a new deal with their captain Jason Varitek, according to WBZ's Dan Roche.
The deal was first reported just before 2 p.m. by
Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.
The Sox had set a Friday deadline for Varitek to accept their final offer.
IS IT A 1 OR 2 YEAR DEAL?
The deal can be described as a two-year deal or a one-year deal with an option.
According to Roche, Varitek will get $5 million guaranteed for the 2009 season.
If the Red Sox want him back in 2010, they have the option to do so for another $5 million.
If the Sox don't exercise that option, Varitek could still decide he wants to play in Boston for 2010, but under this player option, his salary would only be $3 million plus incentives. If he plays 80 or more games in 2010, he will get extra money.

The sides were still working to finalize additional performance bonus provisions.
Varitek must take a physical before the agreement is completed.
Boston had set a Friday deadline for Varitek to accept or reject an offer that would extend his 12-year career with the team.
Varitek, who hit .220 last year, became a free agent after completing a $40 million, four-year contract.
