The family of a Reading man who
tried to stab his psychiatrist to death Tuesday said they are struggling to understand what happened.
Jay Carciero was shot and killed inside a Mass General psychiatric clinic, when he refused to stop stabbing Dr. Astride Desrosiers.
Carciero, a 37-year-old husband and father of four, was being treated for bi-polar disorder. Those who knew him said he was not a violent man, and there was no indication he had the capacity to carry out such violence.
'UNEXPLAINABLE'
In a written statement released to the public, the Carciero family called him, "a devoted and loving father and husband. He was loved and adored by his entire family and many friends
Those that knew Jay personally can attest to the life he lived."
"We never would have imagined that the events that took place at the doctor's office on Tuesday were even possible. What happened that afternoon remains unexplainable to us because Jay was known to his family and friends as such a gentle and caring person.
"Our thoughts and prayers for recovery are with Doctor Desrosiers and her family."
THE DOCTOR & SECURITY GUARD
Desrosiers has been in serious condition at Mass General Hospital, recovering from multiple stab wounds. Friday, her husband asked for the public's prayers, saying his wife really needed them.
The man who killed Carciero,
Paul Langone, also of Reading, is a security guard who carries a special officer license from the Boston Police Department. He was off-duty
when he heard Dr. Desrosiers screams, and went to her aid.
Prosecutors said Wednesday that their preliminary investigation found that Langone "acted lawfully" in shooting Carciero, and likely saved the doctor's life.
CHILDREN'S FUND
A trust fund has been setup at the Stoneham Municipal Federal Credit Union to help care for Carciero's four young children, who range in age from 3-years-old to 12.
"Words cannot express our sorrow over his loss," the family statement read. "He will be missed greatly."
