New Graduates Face Stiff Job Market Competition
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Kara Sawyer is jumping into the job market. Hoping to find work as a nurse, she joined other job-seekers at this open house at New England Baptist Hospital.
"I've been to a couple others, I've been on a couple interviews. But there's not a lot out there. The economy is really tight," said Sawyer, a Northeastern University graduate.
Those filling out forms were looking for a variety of positions, both clinical and non-clinical.
"I've been out of college, working, but I'm just looking for upward mobility, transition, bottom line, looking for stability," said Emmanuel James.
While health care is considered to be among the more stable job fields, competition for many of those entry level positions is stiff.
"We've seen a lot more applicants," said Linda Thompson, Vice President for Human Resources and Service Excellence at the New England Baptist Hospital.
Thompson says some of those applicants are less picky than they might be in a healthier job market.
"I have one person in particular who has a specialty in radiology who's saying I'll basically take whatever."
New England Baptist is a busy hospital.
There are openings here are full and part time jobs for physical and occupational therapists.
And the hospital is looking to staff a new operating room.
It will be an economic cure for some -- but not nearly as many as are looking.
