Teen Hit In Crosswalk: I Almost Died 3 Times
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Hard work is paying off for a Waltham teenager nearly killed back in November by a hit-and-run driver.
John Causland, 17, was walking to work at an assisted living facility on the Sunday after Thanksgiving when
he was struck in a crosswalk.
He spent days struggling for his life, in a coma and then he finally opened his eyes on Christmas Eve. Now John is recovering and progressing at Boston's Spaulding Rehab Hospital.
WBZ's Karen Anderson got the chance to sit down with him on Friday.
"I almost died three times and I'm alive now. I just want people to know that you can do anything if you work at it pretty much," he said.
After he was hit, his parents were told that he might not make it through the night.
My parents tell me that all the time because I woke up on Christmas Eve. So they call me the Christmas miracle," John said.
Since he's been awake, he's been in all types of therapy every day.
"I'm doing really well I've been walking everywhere, to my therapies, I don't need a wheel chair I sit in real chairs now, which is really good," he said.
But he says the therapy hasn't been easy.
"I just grit my teeth and make the best of it, I try not to complain and make the best of it," he said.
John's parents, sisters and friends have been supporting him everyday. He is schedule to go home from the hospital in just two weeks.
Police say the driver who hit John, Bonnie Lee Hicks, was drunk at the time. She's charged with operating under the influence and driving with a suspended license.
