John Henning, Veteran WBZ Reporter, Dies At 73
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
John Henning, a longtime political analyst and reporter for WBZ-TV, died Wednesday night after a battle with a form of leukemia. He was 73.
John covered politics, business and state government in Boston for more than 40 years.

Before joining WBZ-TV in 1981, Henning was an anchor and reporter for WCVB-TV and WNAC-TV. He also worked as a news and sports reporter for WGBH-TV, Boston's public television station.

Henning covered every statewide election in Massachusetts since 1962, and every Boston election since 1963.
He won numerous awards for his reporting on the Boston gangland wars in the 1960s, the search for the Boston Strangler, the Boston busing turmoil of the 1970s, and state budget problems.

In 1995 he received the Governors Award from the Boston/New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for "35 Years of Excellence in News Reporting."
He stopped reporting full-time for WBZ in 2003, but continued to work part-time as an analyst and commentator.
Henning was inducted to the
Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2009.
He served on the National Board of Directors of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), was a president of the Boston Press Club and was a Distinguished Alumnus of Boston University's College of Communication where he received his master's degree.
Henning received a bachelor of science degree in English and political science from Saint Peter's College in New Jersey.
He is survived by two sons, Matt and Greg, three grandchildren and five brothers.
His wife
Betsy passed away in April 2008.
His brother Dan is the
offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.
