Sen. John Kerry is the richest member of Congress, according to the Capitol Hill newspaper
Roll Call.
The paper has compiled a list of the
50 wealthiest U.S. Senators and Representatives, based on 2008 financial disclosure forms filed by every member of Congress.
Kerry tops the list with a reported minimum net worth of $230.98 million.
Sen. Edward Kennedy is ninth with $47.62 million.
Sen. John McCain is in 13th place with more than $19 million. Sen. Barack Obama did not make the list.
But Sen. Hillary Clinton did. She's ranked 29th with a reported minimum net worth of just over $10 million.
Since politicians are purposely vague in disclosure forms, there is no way to determine the accuracy of the list.
Roll Call prefaces the article on its
Web site by saying:
"Everything that you are about to read might be wrong. Roll Call's annual attempt to rank the riches of Members of Congress is hampered by one fundamental flaw: It is based on the lawmakers' financial disclosure forms, which are extraordinarily unreliable sources of information."
