July Fourth Preview Draws Thousands To Esplanade
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Thousands gathered on the Esplanade Tuesday night to watch the dress rehearsal for tonights Fourth of July celebration. Some spectators lined up as early as 7:30 a.m. to ensure a spot on the lawn for the highly anticipated show.
Percussion from the Blue Man Group, jokes from host Craig Ferguson, a perfect performance by musician John Mellencamp and -- of course -- spectacular music from the Boston Pops made Tuesday night's show feel like it was really the Fourth of July.
Earlier in the day, sound checks took place and the finishing touches were being put on the massive fireworks barge that will light up the night sky Wednesday night.
After John Mellencamp's sound check Tuesday afternoon, he delivered a message for all Americans. "I think this July Fourth would be a wonderful opportunity for people to reflect on who we are, who we've become and who we would like to be."
As for security, officials are taking no chances. Bomb sniffing dogs were out at the Hatch Shell for the second day in a row. And on Wednesday, hundreds of state police troopers will be stationed at the Esplanade.
In addition to the new security measures, officials say the usual restrictions still apply. No sharp objects, metal or glassware will be allowed in the area.
The actual Fourth of July show at the Hatch Shell will be watched by an estimated eight million people nationally on CBS. Up to 500,000 people will actually get to see the show live on the Esplanade.
