Longfellow Bridge Closed For 4th Spectators

BOSTON (WBZ) ― State officials have closed a sidewalk on the century-old Longfellow Bridge after an inspection revealed a support beam needs immediate repair.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation also said Friday that the entire bridge will be closed to spectators during the July 4 fireworks and festivities, eliminating access to a popular prime viewing area.

Commissioner Richard Sullivan says the agency's engineers inspected the bridge Thursday night and noted serious deterioration of a steel structure supporting the sidewalk on the side carrying vehicles from Cambridge to Boston.

The state has spent more than $5.5 million on inspections and repairs to the bridge since August 2007.

The repairs are expected to be completed this fall before a scheduled $200 million renovation begins in 2010.
