July 4 has come and gone, but with a grand-scale celebration comes a massive clean-up effort.
According to the Department of Conservation and Recreations, hundreds of thousands of people packed the shores of the Charles River for the fireworks display and Boston Pops concert Saturday night. More than 1,400 boats were counted along the river as well.
As the crowds started to dissipate, DCR crews an about 140 inmates from the Department of Correction began cleaning up the mess. In all, they collected more than 26 tons of trash.
More than 100 recycling bins were placed around the Charles River Esplanada. Crews collected about three tons of discarded cardboard and plastic bottles from the festivities.
The concert kicked off with the national anthem and a flyover of the Air National Guard's 104th Fighter Wing and the Air Force's 131st Fighter Squadron. It ends with a nationally televised fireworks display.
Saturday morning saw the Navy's oldest commissioned warship, the USS Constitution, perform its annual turnaround in Boston Harbor. "Old Ironsides" fired a 21-gun salute and 19-gun salute along the way.
