Kathy Gaffney Swims Boston Harbor To Raise Awareness For Down Syndrome
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
31-year-old Karen Gaffney jumped into the chilly Boston Harbor water on Thursday, and swam 5-miles, in 3-hours. She started at Brewster Island and went all the way to the 'L' Street Bathhouse.
Gaffney is no ordinary competitive swimmer. She's the first person with Down Syndrome to complete a relay swim across the English Channel. She also completed 16 swims across San Francisco Bay and swam 9-miles across Lake Tahoe. And it's all to raise awareness for Down Syndrome.
Support Team Gaffney
Gaffney chose Boston for her swim this year in an effort to celebrate October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month, announced by Gov. Deval Patrick in 2008. Thursday's swim helped raise money for the
Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress and its support programs.
Her route across Boston Harbor was altered a bit, due to 4-foot waves. The Coast Guard had to move her in a little, but she was able to complete her swim.
