Obama Reads Note From Ted At Wesleyan Graduation
MIDDLETOWN, CT (WBZ) ―
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke at Wesleyan University's commencement in place of Sen. Ted Kennedy, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last week.
After thanking the college and congratulating the Wesleyan class of 2008, Obama spoke of Kennedy. "I have the distinct honor today of pinch-hitting for one of my personal heroes and a hero to this country, Senator Edward Kennedy. Teddy wanted to be here very much, but as you know, he's had a very long week and is taking some much-needed rest."
Obama said he was happy to stand in for Kennedy, but added he would not be able to fill his shoes.
Obama did get a few laughs from the crowd after he read a message from Kennedy to the students. "To all those praying for my return to good health, I offer my heartfelt thanks. And to any who'd rather have a different result, I say, don't get your hopes up just yet!"
Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor after suffering two seizures last week. He was released from Mass. General on Wednesday and has been recovering from a biopsy at his Cape Cod home.
