2nd Child Dies In Tragic Holyoke Fire
Kids Playing With Lighter Leads To Fatal Fire
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WBZ) ―
A second child has died from a fire at a Holyoke home that officials say was started by children playing with a cigarette lighter.
Nine-month-old Emily Aguire succumbed to her injuries Friday afternoon at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her 4-year-old brother Daniel Cruz died at the scene of the fire that broke out Thursday evening.
A third child, 6-year-old Angel Cruz, was also injured in the blaze and is being treated for less serious injuries at a Boston hospital, officials said.
Holyoke officials say the fire was started by children playing with a cigarette lighter.
Holyoke Fire Chief David Lafond said Daniel Cruz was in an upstairs bedroom and a babysitter was downstairs when the fire started in the bedroom.
Lafond says the fire produced toxic smoke when it burned a plastic television casing and other items.
The 20-year-old house guest, Xavier Vasquez, was also treated for less serious injuries suffered in the fire. Vasquez rescued Daniel and Emily from the bedroom.
