Boys Left In Car Suffer Apparent CO Poisoning

LUNENBERG, Mass. (WBZ) ― Two children were found unconscious in a car in Lunenburg after the vehicle became stuck in the mud and the three adults they were with went to get help.

According to police officials, the boys, ages 10 and 11, got back inside the running SUV to keep warm and apparently became poisoned by carbon monoxide.

Both were found some time later and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Both kids are said to be in critical condition.

The SUV became stuck in a wooded area near an auto body shop on Massachusetts Avenue.

Lunenburg police chief Dan Bourgeois said investigators are looking into the possibility that the vehicle's exhaust pipe became blocked by the mud, forcing fumes into the vehicle.

Bourgeois said the group had been four-wheeling in the wooded area earlier in the evening when the vehicle became stuck.

The District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident.
