One of two police officers who confronted the alleged Fort Hood killer was once a waitress at a restaurant and bar in Newton.
34-year-old Sgt. Kimberly Munley worked atÂ
Dunn-Gaherin's in Newton Upper Falls about five years ago.
Munley lived in the Boston area back in 2004.
"Everybody's just really proud of her," said Seana Gaherin, co-owner of Dunn-Gaherin's.
Gaherin says she was surprised to hear a former waitress mentioned in the Ft. Hood shooting, but she wasn't surprised at Munley's heroic actions.
"The phone's been ringing off the hook and everyone's in awe. And we all just want to tell her, 'You go girl!' We're so proud of her."
Munley, who was known in Newton as Kimberly Barbour, was hurt in the shootout with Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.
Munley was wounded in both thighs and the wrist. Her injuries aren't believed to be life threatening.
Hasan was critically wounded.
After the shooting, Munley was praised for her bravery. Facebook fan pages quickly sprouted up, with well-wishers cheering her heroism and crediting her and Sgt. Mark Todd with saving lives.
Munley's parents have thanked everyone for their support.
