Police and animal welfare officials say an injured kitten found on a Springfield street was set on fire. And now, the MSPCA is offering a $1,500 reward for any information that will help find those responsible.
The 2-month-old kitten was rescued by a Good Samaritan, who found him still smoldering on Union Street.
Nicholas, the MSPCA has named the kitten, was rushed to the nearest care center for treatment. He had burns to his face, including his ears and tongue. Fur on the kitten's body had been singed by the fire and his whiskers were burned off.
"Nicholas is recovering from one of the most horrific acts of animal cruelty that we have seen," said MSPCA law enforcement officer Christine Allenberg. "He is lucky to be alive and we would like to thank the people responsible for his rescue. We urge anyone with information regarding Nicholas' case to come forward."
For anyone interested in helping cover the costs of Nicholas' care and other animals like him, visit the
MSPCA's Web site. Anyone with information about who's responsible for Nicholas' injuries, call the MSPCA WNE Law Enforcement Department at 1.800.628.5808.
Once Nicholas has recovered, he will be put up for adoption.
