Lawrence Schools Ease Up On Beverage Ban
LAWRENCE (WBZ) ―
The Lawrence School Committee has eased up on a ban of bottled beverages in city schools.
It has decided to allow students to bring bottled water only. Teachers are allowed to bring any bottled beverage.
It was enacted after two underage drinking incidents inside a school building.
The committee decided to allow bottled water after a
pregnant teacher had to be treated at a hospital for dehydration on the first day of the ban.
Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy banned the bottles this week
after students drank alcohol at two separate parties at Lawrence High School's International Academy on March 13. One student needed medical attention.
Police Chief John Romero says two school civilian security officers "purposely misled" police about the existence of a surveillance video that may have captured the drinking incidents.
