Gas powered leaf blowers, while both quick and efficient on lawns, are generating complaints from Newton residents that the equipment is too noisy and polluting.
The city held a hearing Wednesday night on an ordinance that would ban the blowers. The ordinance is in favor of electric blowers considered to be less polluting.
But some landscapers said they would be driven out of business because without the efficient leaf blowers, they would not be able to service as many clients in the same amount of time.
Under the ordinance, Newton would impose fines for violators. If approved, the ban would not go into effect for two years to give landscapers time to switch their equipment.
