A member of a BMW car club who was out driving with other BMW enthusiasts when he struck and killed a woman walking her dog has been convicted of motor vehicle homicide.
David Conant was convicted in Fitchburg District Court on Monday after a two-day bench trial of striking 54-year-old
Elizabeth Powers McCaffrey in November 2008 just yards from her Leominster home.
She died at a hospital hours later.
Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday.
Prosecutors said the 29-year-old Conant was driving the lead vehicle in a group of BMWs along residential streets.
Police estimated he was driving 62 miles per hour in a 40-mile-per-hour zone.
Conant's lawyer, who was driving the BMW directly behind him at the time of the accident, suggested that McCaffrey was crossing the street illegally.
