Police Take Control On Leverett Down Ramp
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
A new Massachusetts State Police presence drew sighs of relief from thousands of commuters Thursday morning. In response to a high number of commuter complaints, troopers were standing on the Leverett Down Ramp, making drivers obey lane restrictions.
The Leverett connects commuters from 93S and the Tobin Bridge to Storrow Drive, Downtown Boston or Cambridge. It is an infamous traffic spot, and is equally infamous as a spot for traffic cheats.
Anyone who has ever driven on the Leverett knows it can be upwards of half an hour wait to get onto Storrow Drive. They also know there are two ways to handle it: sit and wait, or cruise down the empty lane that leads Downtown, and cut into traffic at the last minute.
Thursday morning, commuters who tried to make that last minute move were met by Massachusetts State Police troopers. WBZ cameras were there as driver after driver was directed to stay in their lane - an inconvenience for those in the wrong lane, a relief for those waiting in line.
Watch The VideoState police tell WBZ the troopers were directing traffic in response to numerous complaints that drivers were making illegal lane changes. The problem, according to police, causes unnecessary congestion for drivers trying to use the right lane, which leads to Downtown Boston or Cambridge.
Police say this was not a one-time event. They called Thursday morning's enforcement a success and say they plan to put crews back on the ramp as patrols are available.
