A brush fire in Lexington was burning close to homes off Route 2A and Emerson Gardens Road Friday afternoon.
Lexington fire officials said neighbors were put on alert, but no one was evacuated. Some neighbors were using their garden hoses to moisten their backyards, which would slow down a fire should it creep closer to the houses.
By 5:30 p.m., firefighters appeared to have gotten a handle on the blaze.
At least nine fire departments were called in to help contain it. Fire officials said shifting wind was a concern.
Because of warm, dry weather conditions Friday and this weekend, the National Weather Service issued a
Fire Weather Warning for most of the state.
Earlier Friday, a brush fire broke out in Cambridge, but firefighters were able to control it.
In Gloucester, the public woods within the city's limits were ordered closed until further notice because of dryness and the increased danger of fires. The closure includes the woods in the Norton Memorial Woods at the end of Revere Street.
