If you are somebody who counts on those reminders in the mail every five years to renew your Massachusetts driver's license, it's time to start a new habit. The registry has stopped the mailings, among others, to cut costs.
The recent
state budget cuts slashed millions of dollarsĀ from the RMV. The most highly publicized cost-cutting measures were
reduced hours at registry branches. But Registrar Rachel Kaprilien also decided to cut a host of courtesy mailings.
"Like many businesses across the Commonwealth, the RMV is working to squeeze every penny of savings from our budget in the wake of a drastic downturn in the state's economy," Kaprilien said in a statement on the RMV web site.
As of early November, the following mailings stopped:
License and Mass ID renewal notices
Vehicle Inspection reminder letters for vehicles that are overdue for inspection
Inspector license renewal notices
7D license renewal notices
Driver's Education Certificates
Junior Operator Brochures for parents
Change of address labels
So here is your reminder: your driver's license needs to be renewed every five years and expires on your birthday. You can renew
your license online 'every other' time it expires, as long as you have a valid Social Security number, haven't changed your name and your license photo was taken after you turned 21.
Licenses can also be renewed at
your local RMV branch or license express office.
