Boston Skyscrapers Turning Lights Out
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The lights will be going out Wednesday night at the Hancock Building, Prudential Tower and several other Boston skyscrapers - to save electricity.
The "Lights Out Boston" program is a voluntary initiative targeting skyscrapers of 30 or more floors to turn off architectural and interior lights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. until Oct. 31. The idea is to reduce energy use and protect fall migratory birds.
Some 34 skyscrapers from the Back Bay to the South Boston waterfront will take part. They're expected to save about 25 percent of the energy used for lighting.
Chicago tried a similar idea and saved $100,000.
The FAA said turning the lights off won't affect airplanes since aircrafts are guided by air traffic control.
