Prep School Students Compete To Save Energy

CONCORD, N.H. (WBZ) ― Students at 15 prep schools across the Northeast are competing in an energy conservation challenge called the Green Cup.

The school which cuts its energy consumption the most over a four-week span wins a trophy and $2,750.

Students at some schools are going to great lengths to win, such as eating in the dark and avoiding the elevators.

"What's exciting is, it's with other students we compete with on the courts, on the football field, and now we're competing to see who can turn the lights off more. It's pretty neat," said Rhiya Trivedi, a student at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H.

"The students are becoming more aware of how much we spend on electricity in terms that makes sense to them, like scholarships and pizzas," said Green Cup Co-Chairperson Scott Reynolds.

Here's a list of the competing schools:

Choate Rosemary Hall, in Wallingford, CT
Darrow School, in New Lebanon, NY
Deerfield Academy, in Deerfield, MA
