Logan To Get Safety Runway Lights
New Technology Aims To Reduce Runway Incursions
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Logan International Airport will be one of the first airports in the country to try a new runway safety system.
The Federal Aviation Administration chose Logan to receive runway status lights.
The technology uses a combination of ground detection and lights on the runways to provide visual cues for the pilots in addition to clearance from air traffic controllers.
The system has been tested at San Diego and Dallas/Fort Worth. However, Logan will be the first to use it on intersecting runways. The new technology should help reduce the risk of runway incursions.
More than a dozen airports are expected to obtain the technology by 2011.
