Boy Seriously Injured In Lowell Hit-And-Run
LOWELL (WBZ) ―
A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Lowell on Wednesday afternoon.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. in a crosswalk on the VFW Highway at the intersection of Mammoth Road.
Witnesses said two small vehicles were racing to beat the traffic light when one of them struck the boy.
"They were going about 80, 90 miles an hour, the two of them," said Barbara Winegar, a witness.
Police said that the boy was thrown about 20 feet by the impact.
The vehicles were described as possibly being a blue or black Mazda, Honda or Mitsubishi with extensive damage to the front end.
"Both cars ran the light. It was a blue Mitsubishi, like a light colored car. The black car did not hit the kid, but he was racing the blue car," said Winegar.
Police said the black vehicle stopped briefly and young, white male exited, having words with a witness. He got back into his car and drove off.
He said, "I didn't hit anybody," said Winegar.
He was taken to Lowell General Hospital and then flown to Children's Hospital in Boston with serious injuries.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lowell Police at 978-937-3200.
