Lowell police have charged a teenage driver in a hit-and-run earlier this week that left a young boy seriously hurt.
17-year-old Michelle Medeiros of Methuen is charged with hitting 12-year-old Kelvin Savanhmixay of Lowell as he was walking home from school Wednesday afternoon.
Medeiros was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after personal injury.
Police say Medeiros was drag racing in an Acura at the time and sped off after hitting Savanhmixay, who was knocked 15-to-20 feet in the air.
Lowell Police say they recovered the Acura Medeiros was driving at Best Auto Body in Methuen
'DIDN'T REALIZE WHAT SHE HAD HIT'
"She said she didn't realize what she had hit," said Lowell police Lt. Timothy Crowley.
"She heard something and she saw something hit her windshield."
Police say Medeiros drove away.
The second car in the race stopped briefly. The driver spoke to a witness before speeding off.
Medeiros told police she was not racing.
'THE YOUNG WHITE MALE DRIVER'
Police say they're looking for a "young white male driver with dark hair" who was in a small black coupe at the scene.
They say he hailed a passing ambulance and may have saved the boy's life. Investigators believe he might also have the best eyewitness information and they want him to come forward.
Savanhmixay is in stable condition at Children's Hospital Boston. He's being treated for internal bleeding and head and neck injuries.
MEDEIROS NOT ARRESTED
Police say more charges are possible.
Medeiros was not arrested because leaving the scene of a "personal injury accident" is just a misdemeanor. It's only a felony when the victim dies.
"We expect additional charges to be pursued at a later time," says Dep. Chief Arthur Ryan.
Her license has been revoked.
